Pineapples originated in South America and were discovered by Europeans in the Caribbean Islands in the 1400's. Christopher Columbus brought them back to Europe and although attempts were made to grow them, it soon became apparent that they only flourish in tropical climates. Lutheran missionaries introduced the pineapple to Australia and it now grows abundantly along the coast of Queensland.
